Big Island Wellness Solutions announced it has received final approval from the state Department of Health to operate as a certified/incubator kitchen, according to executive director Audrey Wilson.

The facility at 615 Haihai St. will provide affordable workspace to culinary entrepreneurs as well as start-up, home-based and established businesses looking to grow or reach new markets.

To make food for consumption, purchase or resale in the State of Hawaii, food products must be entirely prepared in a certified kitchen facility. With the health department approval, Big Island Wellness Solutions can provide this service.

The kitchen is fully equipped with commercial grade cooking equipment and is available on an hourly fee basis. The majority of the kitchen equipment was provided by a USDA Rural Development grant.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our community; the Big Island is the bread basket of the state for agriculture products. Big Island Wellness Solutions hopes that individuals will be able to create foodstuffs with locally grown products.

This kitchen will help entrepreneurs prepare and expand their business,” Wilson said.

The facility also has classroom space that will be used to teach healthy lifestyles and work with other agencies to improve the general health of people in the community.

Big Island Wellness Solution is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
